THE CHARACTERS
The occupants of River Crest refuse any "outside influence" to determine how or where they can live. River Crest has become a bastion against the world and they will not succumb to the way people think they should act. They subliminally believe that if River Crest is taken away from them their life is over as well. Like a family they may fight amongst themselves but let someone else say anything against any of them and they will join forces and fight back.
All of these characters are somewhat warped as they are at the stage of their life where age gives them some privilege and they don't want to waste time with the protocol of youth. Even though age has given them some physical and emotional challenges they have tons of experience and the time to put it to good use. With no inhibitions to hold them back they can milk any situation and would win Academy Awards for their performance. They don't want to be associated with negativity or doom and gloom. Even when people die, as they do at River Crest, it's an excuse for a party to celebrate the occasion.
FRANK - is the crusty "leader of the pack" kinda guy who always steers Stan and others into getting involved in his schemes leaving them to deal with the outcome. But he is always fighting for the 50-Plus crowd and their rights but his tirades are not always well thought out leaving him with a conclusion that may not be favourable for the cause. His outward gruff persona covers up his heart of gold and it is his compassion for people and his need to do what is right that generally saves the day.
STAN - Although appearing not to be very bright, through his own way of reasoning he somehow ends up outsmarting the smart. He is an endearing follower who openly accepts what everybody says as the honest truth. He does possess the childish quality of simple deduction. He likes to take on theatrical characters when he tries to explain a situation or engage in a plot to save River Crest. His characters don't necessarily succeed as his efforts to maintain a character always dissipates into a bumbling error-prone activity.
Jillian Jack (JJ): (50's) is the Owner/ Manager of River Crest and really cares for the residents. Her intent is to maintain the safest, quality residence but she always assumes there is a problem, never a solution. Her ability to make "mountains out of mole hills" always keeps her in a crisis moment which almost always brings her to the emotional breaking point forcing her to hide in a closet; or under her desk or in the kitchen's walk in freezer rather than deal with the situation. She just can't focus on finding the elusive solution. Born with a silver spoon in her mouth and supported by her wealthy husband, whose money was gained by dubious means, her attempts to solve a problem results in her trying to pacify everyone and satisfying no one. So she avoids conflicts and messy problems by abdicating decisions to anyone who will accept the responsibility.
Chunky Nurse Evans: (40's) She is on staff to take care of the health and social needs of everyone. She is the sergeant-major of the operation and without her the business would have long gone under. She rules with an iron fist and when she says jump, everyone jumps. She appears "tough as nails" but her demeanour doesn't disguise her love for "her people" as she calls them. Her demand to, "Get your butt outta bed or I'll kick you out," may seem cruel to some but the fact is she gets people up and going and if that's the only exercise they can do then she has done her job.
Mrs Quaill: (70) Resident. HONEY is a "Horney little devil" who has forced Nurse Evans to keep a vigil and stop her from leaving her room at night to roam the corridors looking to end up in some man's bed. This is more for the protection of the men. She really thinks she's a vivacious young woman who can still attract the men and is always willing to demonstrate how she can still "pole dance" with the best of them; and she probably could. She thinks nothing of wearing revealing outfits that would look better on young girls who were twenty pounds lighter.
Sarah Conklin: (30'S) is the receptionist at the front desk. This girl constantly has a smile plastered on her face and no matter what the conversation she will give, if not the appropriate answer, it is her immediate response in the simplest of a reply no matter what the intent of the question from the other person. But her teeth and bubbly personality will never melt away. She's just SO DAMN NICE. She is not dumb; she just can't focus on more than one thing at a time.
Joe Pallilioauche: (nobody can pronounce his last name), has a selective problem communicating in the English language. Although he can make himself be understood when he gets flustered the reverse is true and his vocalization skills sputter into a mixture of various languages and accents. He is the cook and general maintainer of the kitchen/lunchroom. His cooking skills are something he has picked up along life's way but he fancies himself as a great European Chef The reality is he has been at River Crest so long he has become part of the scenery and for some reason does not want to explore the outside world to expand his vocational opportunities. This character could be from any cultural background.
Phyllis Proctor: (69) The new resident who wouldn't be at River Crest if it weren't for her situation with her family. She can't live with them yet doesn't want to be far from them. Her husband died three years ago, leaving her in debt and forced to sell off the house compelling her to come to River Crest. The youngest of the newest arrivals she is constantly "hit upon" by the male population of River Crest. Although flattered with these advances she develops reactive excuses to rebuke the men. "I have herpes"; "My Alzheimer's is kicking in". She never resorts to "no". Phyllis is a child of the sixties, smokes marijuana and has created a "garden of weed" on the River Crest grounds where she cultivates her crop to maintain her supply.
Bill Gardiner: (75) A dapper ladies man, opinionated, self appointed head of the residential committee. He loves to take up a cause because it puts him at the centre of activity barking out orders as if each situation required an attack on the enemy's position. Meanwhile he would gather daily Intelligence to support any military movement. He believes every woman is attracted to him. He thinks he is the ultimate leader but he is always out- manoeuvred by Frank and Stan or anyone else. But he will end up doing what's right.
Hector Moon: (70) Resident. Hector is always manufacturing ways to escape River Crest even though he is free to walk out the front door. He is diagnosed with Alzheimer's but he seems to conveniently slip in and out of his dementia depending on the situation he finds himself in. He continually steals food from the kitchen and hoards it in preparation for his planned escape.
